Non Disney Crossover Pocahontas 2 Journey to a New World

Historically speaking, it's a heck of a lot better than the previous film
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is the sequel to the immensely popular cartoon, POCAHONTAS. For history teachers like myself, POCAHONTAS was a horrid mistake of a film because adherence to fact was pretty much irrelevant to Disney--making a film that was offensive to Native Americans, historians and cheapens the memory of the English colonists. I do realize that this makes me a major kill-joy and NOT someone you want to take with you to see a historically inaccurate movie! So much of what I have to say about these films must be understood from my context.
Now as for POCAHONTAS II, it, too, is a nightmare for historians but at least it's not as big a nightmare! The facts, while quite distorted, are still generally correct but the film is just too heavy on the politically correct side (with tons of images of the "stupid" English and the "good" Indians) and it totally ignores the fact that Pocahontas died soon after moving to England! Now I do understand why this was omitted, as countless kids across the globe might need therapy to deal with this loss! However, if you want to play that "fast and loose" with the facts, why not just make up a movie from start to finish? A wonderful example is THE ROAD TO EL DORADO--an infinitely better film because it's obviously fantasy and doesn't try to sell lies as historical facts.

Oh come on! It's not that bad!
Do bear in mind that this is a sequel to one of the weaker Disney movies of the 90s. Don't get me wrong, its predecessor is a very good movie, that was compensated by beautiful songs and gorgeous animation, but let down by weak secondary character development. It is a direct to video sequel, and it wasn't as good as the original, and I honestly wasn't expecting it to be. Also the very poignant ending of the first film was suggestive of a sequel. The sequel is definitely blander, I thought Uti was unnecessary, the dialogue was awful mostly and the editing could've been better. The animation isn't as stunning as the original, but my advice to all of you is to watch it with low expectations,as there is a beautiful ballroom scene, even if the rest of the rest of the film lacks detail and precision. The songs are not as spectacular as the original, but they aren't horrible, I loved the one over the end credits, and where do I go from here. It was a huge advantage having Judy Kuhn back on board, as she did a fantastic job with Pocahontas's singing voice. Billy Zane is a good singer, can't say the same for his acting. The plot wasn't that original, but it was attempting to stay close to the legend. There was a bit of humour, but not much, and I liked the fact that Ratcliffe was more villainous, and that they kept Pocahontas the same, apart from some rather ludicrous dialogue. I also think, it was a wise move replacing Mel Gibson. I didn't really like the ending that much though, it ruined the love story of the first film. All in all, fairly watchable, but watch with low expectations. 6.5/10 Bethany Cox

Disappointing Sequel
Pocahontas II (1998)
** (out of 4)
Direct-to-video sequel from Disney has Pocahontas traveling to England after learning of John Smith's death. Once there she's fears that her people and England will be at war after lies told to the King so she must try and make peace between the two sides. The original film wasn't a Disney classic but it's certainly much better than this film here. I will admit that I hadn't seen any of the Disney direct-to-video releases so I can't comment on the quality of all of them but this one here certainly suffers from a pretty weak story that kills everything. I thought for the most part the animation was quite good, although it's certainly not classic by any stretch of the imagination. I thought the highlight was again the character Pocahontas who is simply beautiful and very memorable. Her raccoon friend is back but he's letdown by the screenplay, which gives him nothing special to do. Pretty much every character here is rather blandly written as none of them come to life or give any energy to the movie. The story too is pretty bland with the only bit of life coming as the title character tries to fit in with English customs. The vocal work is pretty good but as with the first film, the music and songs are mostly forgettable. Fans of Disney might want to check this out but others should go for one of their classics.

Lame
I sort of enjoyed the first Pocahontas film that was released in 1995, I never got to see the second one, so I figured why not give most Disney sequels a chance? I mean The Lion King trilogy was actually pretty good along with Aladdin and Toy Story. But this was a very cheesy and incredibly disgraceful to history and Disney in general. I don't judge normally on movies with history, but I worry that because this is a viewing for children that they will get things mixed up. I know it's a stupid reason, but I just take history very seriously. It's a movie for the kids, nothing more, no good jokes for the adults to laugh at. Not to mention the editing was pretty cheap.

Was this really needed?
The first film was bad enough, and politically correct enough, but now they go ahead and ruin the story of Pochahontas - at least ruin what was left over in the first place after the original film. Mel Gibson has (wisely) left this straight-to-video feature, and his brother Donal(d) fills in for John Smith's voice. This was not needed, just like the first film. What is it with Disney and their trashy made-for-video sequels? Next it will be "Beauty and the Beast in Nashville" or "The Lion King: Feeding Frenzy" or "Pinocchio Goes to War"! The possibilities of cashing in on past franchises are endless!

I can't believe this was made
P2 is a movie based on lies and bloodshed. A woman who was supposed to be historically 12-14 decides to interracial date a grown man and leave her land taking long with her a raccoon and her body guard.
P2 should not have been made. It's an unneeded sequel. Probably top 10 worse Disney sequels of all time.
Story: The story was just uninteresting. Pocahontas being in barbaric England was not fun at all. It was just her preventing the death of her boyfriend John Smith. Also having to deal with snubs.
Music: As usual Disney produces boring songs with the same annoying melody.
Enjoyment: Meh, You see it once and that's enough.
Overall: Shouldn't have been made. 1st one will always be ultimate. No one else even recalls P2JTANW exists like a 7th building.
Last Words: Barbaric movie.

Such a shame it is fictional
Warning: Spoilers
This film was apparently done for television and the format is definitely that of television in the late 1990s. This implies the picture cannot be as rich as on a silver screen, and special effects have to be more modest. It also implies a lot of close-up images and slower movement.
The film though is interesting in all the twists it introduces in the story.
The meeting with John Rolfe in America is purely formal and it is the fact that Powhatan, her father, decides to send her on a diplomatic mission in England that she is going to travel with John Rolfe and actually have a rather close and yet distant connection.
In fact John Rolfe is going to fall in love with her little by little and then she will fall in love with him at the same pace. The adventures in London have nothing to do with reality. She is at first a success at the Hunt Ball, but she is frightened and horrified by the treatment of a bear in some magic show presented to the King by Ratcliffe who is waiting for Pocahontas' mission to fail in order to take the lead of an armada that is already ready to sail to Virginia in order to exterminate the savages. Ratcliffe wants his vengeance.
She is then sent to the Tower to be executed on the following day. But then John Smith gets John Rolfe on a salvaging mission to the Tower. Pocahontas discovers John Smith and her old friendship is reactivated but for no avail because what John Smith proposes is not stability but adventure and Pocahontas wants some kind of stability.
They escape from the Tower of London and rush to the admiralship of the armada to stop Ratcliffe. The battle is funny, but without any suspense at all. It is then that she discovers she loves John Rolfe and that her love is answered positively. So they sail to America to live their love story in Virginia.
Nothing to do with real story, with her marrying John Rolfe in Jamestown and having a son Thomas there. Nothing to do with her dying in Gravesend and being buried there. This is pure fiction and as such does not help re-evaluating the character. It is pure commercial exploitation of a fertile field and nothing else.

A guilt pleasure of mine
Warning: Spoilers
Pocahontas II Journey To A New World is the 1998 sequel to the 1995 smash hit that is Pocahontas. The story is based on REAL EVENTS and tells the story of Pocahontas who travels to London with a new man by her side(No not that John Smith but ANOTHER John called John Rolfe)as the evil villain from the 1st movie Radcliffe strikes again. Of course Pocahontas thinks that John Smith is dead even though his not.But problems arise when Pocahontas falls for Rolfe and when she learns that Smith isn't dead she must choose which man she wants to have.
OK my only problem with this movie are a few things.
1. Why did they turn John Smith into an egotistical moron?
2. Why did they turn Pocahontas into a cheater by going off with another man,YES I know its based on real events you can't blame Disney for that,I mean it would be the same if Tangled was based on a true story and Rapunzel would go off with one of the Stabbington Brothers OR if it was Belle from Beauty & The Beast she would go off with Gaston and leave Beast behind if it was vice versa, have the Beast as the bad guy,and Gaston as the good guy.
3. Why didn't Pocahontas decide to leave her people NOW when in the first movie she wouldn't go off with Smith in the end.(Again based on real events as Pocahontas married John Rolfe in real life and became Rebecca Rolfe and they had children together).
The animation was nice but its amazing how the animator that did Pocahontas in this movie was similar to Glen Keane's design. Its hilarious how they made her like the same as Keane's creation
The songs are nice but you can't beat If I Never Knew You or Colours Of The Wind.
The voice acting is good but seriously the guy voicing John Smith I could have sworn it was Mel Gibson but NOPE they hired his brother Donal to do it instead, sure NO wonder he was a jerk in this kiss my butt sequel.
But in saying this I can't help but watch it on VHS now and again as I thought some parts to it was good. But in my opinion the first one was better and the romance between Smith and Pocahontas was 100 times better than her and Rolfe,I dunno I just can't put my finger on it.

Warning: Spoilers
Sequels rarely live up to the original, and this is no exception. Pocohantas travels to London after hearing of John Smith's death. The story doesn't measure up to the original, while the animation is still stellar and some of the original voice cast does return. Stick with the original!

I just about enjoyed it
Marginally a good film.
For a sequel, 'Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World' is indeed a fine attempt. I like the story of Pocahontas visiting London and seeing a new place, though the new love story is pretty dull and forced.
Irene Bedard is again good, while Billy Zane comes in with a fair performance as John Rolfe; arguably better than Mel Gibson's John Smith. The latter is now voiced by Mel's brother, Donal, funnily enough.
The problem when films add another 'good' love interest is that you end up having to force the lead into one direction, most of the time without strong reasoning - that's exactly what happens here unfortunately.
I'm sure the story of Pocahontas is again fictionalised just like in the original, but as a film it stands up solidly and I just about enjoyed it.

Wow...
Warning: Spoilers
I really had the highest expectations for this movie. And it had a nice plot, it was interesting. And she must be the first Disney princess to end up with someone other than her original love interest, that was something original. But I wasn't crazy about the movie!

View with caution or don't view at all
Warning: Spoilers
To all the Pocahontas lovers, it is probably for the best that you do NOT view this movie. It is not terrible, and to some degree it is a nice extention of the story, but ONLY to some degree. As a whole I'd call it mediocre.
Pocahontas 2 lacks a sense of maturity which is part of what made the first so good. The humour here is a little stronger, but you get the feeling that the filmmakers may be trying to hard to appeal to the smallest ones in the family. There are more kiddie laughs than there are decent lines of dialogue.
I found Some scenes to be better than others. Pocahontas 2 doesn't get off to such a bad start but it has a poor finale which is the result of the very bold move. Pocahontas never ended up with John Smith (for those who don't know) She married John Rolph, an adviser to the king, who would become a plantation owner upon his return to the new world. In an attempt to bring he and Pocahontas together, the character of John Smith gets a major mistreatment. This is not the same person who we loved and/or admired from ten years earlier. Here he seems brash, brain-dead underwritten and unappealing, sort of like he was before he met Pocahontas. Rolphe meanwhile is given all the better qualities.
The three or four song numbers in the film, feel rather like rehashing of previous Disney works. One number is accompanied by a sequence which pilfers too much design from the opening number of Beauty and the Beast. Pocahontas doesn't sing as well in this movie, probably as the result of a new vocalist.
The movies only effectiveness goes as far as having a few laughs, and for a while being able to provide something new, but when it's over it feels a little to cheap to recommend. If you absolutely have to see it, go ahead, but you won't like it that much.

I don't think I would have watched this had it not been for the ending of its predecessor
In case you haven't read my review of Disney's 1995 theatrical film, "Pocahontas", I stated that I saw it on the big screen when I was just under the age of 9, and was not too pleased. I think I liked every other animated Disney effort I saw in my childhood (both the ones Walt produced and the ones that have been made since his death) more than that one. That's why I only saw "Pocahontas" once until over a decade later, and even then, I still wasn't that impressed. I guess the main reason why I watched this straight-to-video sequel was because the ending of the original left me a tad curious.
Back in England, John Smith is presumed dead! When this news gets across the ocean, Pocahontas is very upset, but knows she has to move on. Later, when a ship from England arrives, Pocahontas soon meets John Rolfe, which doesn't work out too well at first. However, in order to stop England from waging war on Jamestown, an envoy must come back with Rolfe to try and convince King James that a war is unnecessary! After some thought and advice from Grandmother Willow, Pocahontas soon sets out across the ocean on Rolfe's ship as the envoy. Her three animal friends, Meeko, Flit, and Percy, also come along, as stowaways on the boat. While in England, the evil Governor Ratcliffe will make Pocahontas' mission harder, as he is determined to have the two lands go to war, and his lies constantly fool the King!
In my opinion, Disney's animated films usually feature good humour, but not the two "Pocahontas" ones. In this sequel, we once again see the antics of Meeko, Flit, and Percy, and once again, they're not usually funny at all, if ever. I don't know how to explain why these characters aren't funny, but for some reason, it certainly isn't hard for me to keep a straight face while watching them. They're probably more amusing to kids. There are also some rather poor voice-overs, such as the way Nakoma says "Perhaps it's time to put this behind you." Not a bad quote, but poorly spoken, and it's not the only line like that. It also seems there aren't any memorable songs, and nothing too touching. I didn't find too many positive aspects in this movie, apart from just a bit of excitement.
Like the original, it appears "Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World" can be widely criticised for historical inaccuracies, but like the original, that's not what I'm complaining about, since I'm not a history buff, and expect historical films to usually contain a significant amount of fiction. After the closing credits in this film, it even admits that it's a fictionalized account. However, like the original, and like probably most Disney straight-to-video sequels (usually sequels to superior Disney flicks), this is a weak effort from Disney. A lot of people here seem to think this movie is awful, but I disagree. It may be slightly inferior to the already lacklustre original, but not by much in my opinion. However, it's still a highly dismissible and rightfully ignored film, one which I'm sure could entertain many kids, but otherwise should be left to rot in obscurity.

Why all the hate?
Yes, it is one of those infamous Disney sequels we all love to hate. But since the original Pocahontas was not that great, I do not entirely share the hatred towards this one.
There is a plot hole about Ratcliffe's return I feel is a little irritating, but that is pretty much the only thing. The animation is not bad, it just lacks some of those moments from the original (during Colors of the Wind and Savages for example).
The movie presents to us a couple of new character I actually like. Pocahontas' bodyguard is hilarious! Mrs. Jenkins is a likable clumsy character and John Rolfe is a little bland, but decent. I found Pocahontas' and Uti's interactions with the London crowd and the royals amusing. The best part of the movie.
The original Pocahontas has one of my favorite songs in the Disney catalog (Colors of the Wind), but aside from that the songs were forgettable. Ratcliffe was a weak villain and the romance was boring. Despite the aforementioned plot hole about Ratcliffe, I find his motivations more interesting in this one. The music also decent ("Where Do I Go From Here" is the most memorable).
I cannot be offended by Pocahontas' rejection of John Smith in this, because I find their romance was non-existing in the original. Despite the the still visible downgrade in the visual pleasing from the original this one is not a giant leap backwards compared to other Disney sequels (Hunchback, Lion King, Beauty and the Beast etc.)

A good sequel
Pocahontas 2 is another good sequel! It's fun, intense, and filled with great music. Except, there wasn't a ton of music like I had hoped. John Rolfe is great! I enjoyed his and Pocahontas' romance. Even seeing John Smith was pretty nice.
Overall, a good sequel!

Isn't as smooth as the original
Warning: Spoilers
"Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World" is the direct-to-video sequel which takes our title character to England as a diplomat. She's dispatched to prove to the King that the Native Americans aren't savages and can live in peace with new settlers. Along the way, she meets up with John Smith and falls in love with John Rolfe. She must choose between the two while learning to be "proper" and foiling the attempts of saboteurs who want to have the Indians exterminated so the Americas can be conquered.
The follow-up isn't as smooth as the original in its animation style. There's a big difference in the quality. If you were just stepping into the movie having not seen the first one in a long time it wouldn't be as noticeable. If you watch them back-to-back the differences are apparent. That's not to say the animation is poor quality. It's just not as polished as its big-screen predecessor.
"Pocahontas II" fits into the "Disney Princess" mold better than the first film. John Smith leaving Pocahontas behind at the end of the first movie didn't give me a sense of "Happily Ever After" I expect from these types of movies. The sequel ends on a more positive note that easily ushers the Native American into the Hall of Fame of Disney Royalty.

The Disney sequels are actually good
Just like the first one, this was also a good movie. I use to own this on video, and remember this movie very well. If you enjoyed Pocahontas, you will also enjoy Pocahontas II - you'd be surprised. The story basically continues after the first. The clue is in the title: "Journey to a New World", and a wonderful title for its sequel. It's hard to say if it's just as good as Pocahontas, but I leave it for you to decide whether it is or not. I don't know where this idea that the Disney sequels are poor came from. I totally disagree with that if that's the case. I think people just don't give enough attention, as they do with the original movies for some reason, but that can all change quickly very soon. The Disney sequels are not poor; they're in fact good. I actually like the sequels more than anything, and that includes Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World.

A very good movie.
This showed more character development and tied up loose ends left from the first movie. all the origonal characters from the first one as well as new ones come together to make this a great viewing experience. this is a great treat for all the Disney fans out there. even if you just like Disney its a great watch. on another note this is a vital film in the Disney canon due in part to the fact that Disney will no longer produce new movies based on their classic style of animation. yes disappointing i know but they gave way to only producing new projects with cgi. anyway when does part three come out? i hope its just as good.

Forgettable at first, memorable and engaging at last
Warning: Spoilers
I first saw this film when I was about 12 or 13 when my dad rented it from his gym and while I found it an average film to begin with, it was also forgettable apart from the brief running gag of Meeko's seasickness. Fast forward several years later, I watched the Nostalgia Chick's 'Top 5 Least Awful Disney Sequels' where she placed this at no. 5 tied with 'The Lion King II: Simba's Pride' and the clips from this film refreshed my memory to a certain extent. More recently after having re-visited the lovely original, I decided to watch this on Amazon Instant Video and as I watched it, I was surprised at how I enjoyed it even more than I did first time around despite a couple of cons.
Beginning with these cons, the animation quality is not as good as that in the first with the odd jerky movement and a Saturday morning cartoon look, particularly on the background characters, despite some effective uses of cel-shading, lighting and the principles of follow through and overlapping action and squash and stretch. The second con is that there are some historical inaccuracies with regard to Pocahontas visiting England (the original had similar inaccuracies too) but in spite of this the story on the whole is engaging, especially when Pocahontas is adjusting to British customs.
Further to the positives, the incidental music is surprisingly good for a DTV sequel as it sounds cinematic and majestic in parts. While the songs here are not quite as good as the ones in the original, I really liked 'Where Do I Go From Here?,' 'What a Day in London' and 'Things Are Not What They Appear' as well as the gorgeous closing credits song. The characters who appeared in the original make a welcoming return, especially Pocahontas herself and Meeko, Flit and Percy (who are their usual cute and amusing selves here), but Nakoma and Grandmother Willow get considerably less screen time here than they did in the original, but this makes sense nonetheless. There are some worthwhile new characters such as John Rolfe, his supportive maid Mrs Jenkins albeit her somewhat repetitive dialogue about putting the tea on and Uti, who rarely speaks but is strong-willed nonetheless. The dialogue was decent but predictable in parts. Despite Donal Gibson replacing his brother for the voice of John Smith, he did his best to recreate the voice while Irene Bedard (speaking) and Judy Khun (singing) were more than welcome as Pocahontas; David Ogden Stiers was as menacing for John Ratcliffe; and Billy Zane and Jim Cummings were great as John Rolfe and King James respectively.
Overall, the animation quality may be slightly lacklustre here but otherwise this film was far more enjoyable second time around with its story, inaccuracies aside, and music as its best pros. 8/10.

Just... No
Warning: Spoilers
The only reason this isnt one star is because they re-hired Pochontas's original voice actress. I notice Mel Gibson wasnt interested in voicing Smith this time around, haha.
But anyway... oh gosh. This movie is... strange. John Rolfe has ZERO personality, yet we're supposed to cheer when Pocahontas chooses him over the far superior Smith?
Oh, and who is responsible for the drastic change in Smith's character?! He went from confident but caring to an absolute narcissist who cares nothing for Pocahontas or her desires. What happened to, "No matter what happens to me, I'll always be with you"? I miss the old, charming, dashing John Smith who was miles better than the boring, milk-toast John Rolf.
The songs were okay. Kind of... bland, but they were okay. I'm not a musical person, so it really didnt matter to me.
I just dont understand why they went historically accurate this time. The last movie was enchanting, despite the inaccuracies. The romance between Smith and Pocahontas was beautiful. And this movie throws it all away because someone complained? No. I want to see Smith and Pocahontas together!
Overall, probably the worst Disney sequel ever. Please do yourself a favor and just re-watch the first one.
Ps. Where is sweet Thomas??! It would've been so easy to add him. Why. is. he. not. here???

What a waste of time
Warning: Spoilers
God awful. I loved Pocahontas, (the original) despite the bad reviews it garnered, but this is just ridiculous. In this movie Pocahontas journeys to London, (what some say she should have done the first time around) with a Mr. John Rolfe, who comes across as a pompous sailer who thinks he's a big shot. They are friendly together as he tries to help her blend and mix into London society, but nowhere here do you see these supposed "sparks" of interest as they really are just working together. She doesn't do well with the King (who is represented as a dumb puppet with no thoughts of his own, and drawn to resemble the bad guy from "Swan Princess") and who is being manipulated by Ratcliff. (Why is he still here?)
The story just gets more ridiculous from there. The animation is very "straight to DVD", heavily resembling that of "Hunchback of Notre Dame 2" and the musical numbers are beyond dreadful. Even with Judy Kuhn reprising the singing voice of Pocahontas there is only so much she can do. The one semi-decent song is "Where do I go from here" but even that gets annoying by the time it is reprised in the forest. When John Smith miraculously appears to be not dead (As Pocahontas thought) you find that he is not the charming, understanding man from the original. They made him more narcissistic so as to make you the viewer more inclined to like John Rolfe who has no personality at all.
By the end of this rushed movie with no story line you are confused as to why the King suddenly changed his mind, why John Smith is now a jerk, and why Pocahontas wants to be with this John Rolfe man. (Perhaps she is just lonely) All in all this story could have been put together by a bunch of brainless third graders. I do not recommend it to anyone, child or adult. This is probably THE worst Disney sequel and movie ever made. It almost makes me cry with grief because of it.

I wanted to like this, but I didn't
I watched this a few years ago. I did not like it. Pocahontas wasn't as strong as she was in the first movie. It didn't have good dialogue. The songs were quite forgettable. The characters were not very memorable and had zero depth. This movie is plain bad.

The things I do for my kids...
Including having this piece of garbage in the house. I thought I'd seen the worst of Disney crap with the Beauty and the Beast sequel, but I was wrong. This is much worse. The dialogue is unbelievable - would anyone in the 17th century have talked about "respecting my culture" the way this thoroughly PC Pocahontas does? The cartooning is dreadful - James I is portrayed as a ninny, who makes the old Bugs Bunny parody of Charles Laughton as Nero look like a Holbein portrait. There's some silly "My Fair Lady" plot tossed in, complete with historically nowhere costuming. But the worst thing is the music. It's smeared on everything, like a layer of cheap paint, and it is all completely pointless. This movie gives rise to the question, fatal for any musical, "What is this music here FOR?" In a good musical, the music and songs are supposed to add layers of meaning that mere spoken dialogue can't do - sort of like reaching for another medium to convey more than you can do with words. But in this, the music is just stuck on there because - well, because this is a Disney film, and that's what Disney films DO. It goes on and on - half the time I think they put in songs because a song will take up 3 or 4 minutes, and will use up more time than a spoken line. The dialogue seemed to be tiny little bridges between one ghastly song after another. And everything was a cliche - the chorus was always shouting, the English were always singing some jiggity-jiggity-jig song and Pocahontas was forever warbling long, flowing ballads. The whole thing is a mess.

This is what happens when Disney makes a sequel to one of there films
When it comes to sequels to animated films, they don't turn out so good. For Disney, they have made tons of sequels to there films. Most of them, sucked (With the exception of, "The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride").
In 1998, they released a Direct-To-Video sequel to the 1995 animated film, "Pocahontas". The sequel is called, "Pocahontas 2: Journey to a New World".
The story is about Pocahontas going to England with John Rolfe after when Pocahontas hears rumor's about John Smith dead. That's it.
Con's: The film's story is bland, I felt like there was barely any love from the first film, the song's were mostly short and unmemorable mostly because Alan Menken did not return, and the sidekicks, Meeko and Percy, were not that funny.
Pro's: The film does have some good animation, the song, "Thing's are not what they appear", was decent, and the voice acting was pretty good.
Overall: "Pocahontas 2: Journey to a New World", is a bland sequel to a Disney classic. I would avoid this movie if I were you.

For a lower budgeted TV movie compared to the original, it's decently engaging, has decent music and decent animation. It tries to do something new.
This sequel is not nearly as bad as some of the other direct-to-video Disney sequels. Surprisingly enough, it tries to tackle interesting themes like Pocahontas going to London and the reception of the british that returned from the New World. Even at some points it tries to be mature, mysterious and even frightening (for a younger audience). But some choices might have been a response to the backlash of the previous movie.
This time around, the interactions between some of the main characters are well-realised, the introduction of new characters is refreshing and well immersed in the plot. It tries to provide both physical and emotional conflicts, and again, for a TV movie, is decent entertainment quality.
Some aspects were welcomed if only for keeping the essence of the previous, like the cultural clash between Pocahontas and the people of london, or even smaller things like the initial winter setting, the characterization of the english folk and the morals. The humor is not nearly as bad as it could have been, the comedic timing is decent and the animals do serve a purpose even if it's only the same one as the previous. To some they might come across as annoying, being I one of those people. Some heartfelt moments are earned even if it's only at the expense of the relationships and themes established in the previous.
Nevertheless, the movie does hold some very awkward and poorly written moments. Some made just for comedic purposes, I believe this movie could have benefited from a more mature tone. Some of the London folk and Kings of England are extremely cartoonised and many times clash with the designs of the main characters. The animation is decent in what respects to sword fighting and some of the action scenes, however, the inclusion of 3D computer animation did not age well in the ships and the traditional animation isn't as thorouhgly detailed as seen in grandma willow. Then again, as expected from a TV movie, the animation is not nearly as soothing as it was on the previous.
The first half of the movie provides a well set up conflict and well flesh-out characters (considering), but the second half starting from the ball-dinner party it begins to get a little deceitful and not that well realised. It serves the purpose of providing conflict but it goes down very rushed and the "battle scene" has a bit of clumsy writing. It doesn't follow through with the non-conflict ending the previous was so pioneering with. The themes present in this world are of allowing multicultural understanding without resorting to clonflict (even if it's for the sake of preventing a bigger conflict). It just shies away for fear of not sticking the landing of the potential messages it has.
IN CONCLUSION, the movie could be picked apart if compared to the previous or even other bigger budgeted movies. With the expectations of a TV movie it should be looked at with different eyes. It doesn't excuse the blatant character assassinations or the inconsistencies and lack of set up this movie has. It gives interesting reasonable returns to characters and callbacks to symbolisms of the previous movie as well as innovating with new ones and other aspects. It is entertaining for kids and a light watch for adults.
